Bomkai Saree

  • Historical Background: The Bomkai saree, originating from the Bomkai region in Odisha, has been woven since ancient times and is known for its fusion of traditional Ikat and embroidery techniques. It is distinguished by the use of rich silk and cotton threads.
Process: The process of creating a Bomkai saree begins with yarn dyed using the Ikat technique, where parts of the yarn are tied and dyed to create beautiful patterns. After dyeing, the yarn is carefully arranged on a handloom for weaving. The fabric’s body is usually a blend of plain weave and intricate patterns. The Bomkai saree is further enhanced with hand-embroidery, which is done on the borders and pallu (the end part of the saree). The embroidery typically uses silk threads to create motifs that include traditional symbols, animals, and geometric patterns. The weaving process is intricate and requires high skill to maintain the balance between the tie-dye and embroidery elements.
Current Demand: Bomkai sarees are sought after for their unique patterns and intricate embroidery, particularly for festive wear and weddings.
    Locations: Ganjam, Berhampur, and Khurda.
